Drive to Hamedela via Berhale. The Danakil Depression can be said to ‘begin’ here. It is one of the most inhospitable regions of the world, but is nonetheless spectacular, full of eye-catching colors, as in the sulphur springs. The desert has several points lying more than 100 meters (328 ft) below sea level.
We travel out to the Karo people at Kolcho village on the banks of the Omo river The Karo people excel in traditional body painting. This evening we visit a Hamer Village near to our accommodation. The Hamer are fine looking people taking great pride in their appearance – the women, with their red dyed plaited hair wear leather skirts decorated with shells, are beautiful
Located in the north-east of Ethiopia, Lalibela is another renowned historical destination. Placed third in historic sequence, its site hosts the “Eighth wonder of the world”, the Lalibela rock-hewn churches. UNESCO has recorded this site as one of the world wonders. It is also holy land for Ethiopia’s Orthodox Christians.

I highly recommend booking your tour with Ethio Danakil Tours which arranged my solo tour at the end of April 2019, as per my requests, from Dalool to Lalibela in Toyota 4x4. The agency is very reliable and responsive (both by email and WhatsApp); the guides too are rather accommodating to satisfy your needs. The organization is unquestionable, do not forget you are in one of the most impervious and inhospitable regions of the world, so adaptation and flexibility is required. I had private expert and very cool and supportive drivers on both legs of my tour for which security was paramount without impinging on the fun! No running water so be prepared. Beware food on camp or on the road is basic (mainly rice, pasta, veggies and eggs for breakfast), do not ask for injera which is best to get elsewhere!! I recommend to buy some beers beforehand as none at the camp, to enjoy under the stars after dinner! I had a smashing time in Danakil also joining other groups for lunch and dinner, talking to the Afar guards, climbing up to the depression and meeting the local Afar nearby the camp and sleeping nights under the stars, awesome! The long drive to Lalibela to arrive on Good Friday on Easter time was simply a dream come true; what magical and unforgettable days! The tour cost was commensurate to the days spent in the region, and worth it!!!! Comparatively speaking other agencies would have charged me more! Should I return to visit Ertale which I did not deliberately visited this time round ... well, I’ll definitely call on Etiopia Danakil Tours again. Cheers guys!!!
